Installment Loans for Bad Credit: What’s Actually Available and What It Costs

“Bad credit” does not close the licensed installment market — it prices you within it. State-licensed installment lenders approve borrowers banks decline, at APRs set by state law and risk tier. Knowing the bands before you apply turns a vague search into a two-quote comparison.

What underwriting looks at (when FICO is weak)

  • Income stability — the strongest input at this tier; steady W-2 or benefits income matters more than score.
  • Debt-to-income — existing installment and payday obligations, often checked against state databases.
  • Banking behavior — returned items, overdraft patterns, account age.
  • Collateral (secured variants) — vehicle-secured installment products exist where unsecured pricing would be prohibitive.

The APR bands you should expect

Market tierTypical APRWhere
Rate-cap states≈36% or lowerStates licensing small loans under a 36% ceiling
Standard licensed installmentRoughly 60%–199%Most payday-permitting states, tiered by credit and term
Credit-union PAL (comparison)28% cap, alwaysFederal credit unions nationwide
Tribal / unlicensed online100%–700%+Outside state caps — see the benchmarks

Your state’s exact installment ceiling is on its state page with the monthly-payment table for common amounts and terms.

How the term moves the total

The monthly payment is the comfort lever; the total is the price. Same $2,000 at 149%:

TermMonthly paymentTotal repaid
12 months≈$247≈$2,960
18 months≈$185≈$3,330
24 months≈$151≈$3,630

Stretching the term “to make it affordable” costs $670 across those three lines. Pick the shortest term whose payment actually fits — not the one that looks smallest on the quote screen.

Secured vs unsecured, and the two features worth demanding

Secured (vehicle-titled) variants price lower per dollar but convert a missed payment into a repossession risk — the same trade title loans make, just with better rates. Unsecured at this tier prices higher but leaves your car out of the contract. Whichever side you land on, demand two things: no prepayment penalty — standard in the licensed market, and the single cheapest option if your income recovers faster than the term — and credit reporting: lenders that report to the bureaus let the loan rebuild the file that priced it. A triple-digit-APR product that reports nothing gives you the cost without the repair — the worst of both.

Red flags specific to this tier

  • “No credit check, no bank verification, instant approval” in the same sentence — that is a lead form, not a lender.
  • Fees quoted as points “paid at funding” on top of APR — ask whether they refund on early payoff.
  • Refinance pushes at payment one — serial refinancing is how a $2,000 problem becomes a $6,000 one.

And the standing reminder: price the credit-union line first. Membership is the one-time cost that reprices every future gap.
